2000-2020 U.S. Presidential Election Voting Structure

This table displays the relative spread between the major two U.S. political parties. Each state's popular vote margin between Democrats and Republicans is adjusted by the national outcome in that election.

In 2020, Trump beat Biden by 25.5% of the vote in Alabama. Biden led the vote nationwide by 4.4%. The relative spread is the difference between the state and nationwide vote results, here 29.9% (which is shown in the table below).

Adjusting each state by the nationwide result allows an understanding if a state is trending to one party or the other and by how much. Considerations must be made for significant third party candidates. In the U.S. this hasn't happened nationally since the 1990s.

The electoral votes listed are those following reapportionment from the 2020 Decennial Census and will be used for the 2024 and 2028 U.S. Presidential Elections.
