The incidence of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias in Europe (1990-2021), by gender

From 1990 to 2021, the incidence of Alzheimer's disease has increased in Europe, with a higher incidence rate on female rather than male in Average.

Between 1990 and 2021, the incidence rate of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias increased for both males and females in Europe. For males, the rate rose from 95.49 to 177.54 cases per 100,000 population, representing an absolute increase of 82.05 cases per 100,000. For females, the incidence increased from 211.43 to 326.52 cases per 100,000, corresponding to an absolute increase of 115.09 cases per 100,000. This indicates that, in absolute terms, the increase in incidence was larger among females than males over the study period. When considering the relative change compared to the initial levels in 1990, the pattern differs slightly. The incidence among males increased by 85.93%, while among females it increased by 54.43% between 1990 and 2021. Although females experienced a greater absolute rise in incidence, the relative growth was higher among males, indicating a faster proportional increase in incidence rates over time for men.
