This classification of counties and cities allow us to identify different types of regions according to their settlement structure. With the ´Natural Breaks Method´ differences of population density within the (seven) groups are minimzed, while differences between the groups are maximized. Spatial units that show higher population densities than 513 inhabitants per square kilometer tend to have an urban character. Those with lower densities rather show characteristics of rural spaces. One might label the seven groups of counties and cities as: (1) rural and peripheral, (2) rural, (3) partly urbanized, (4) suburban, (5) urban, (6) semi-metropolitan and (7) metropolitan.
