In the northern territories of the Irkutsk region, the population has significantly decreased. For example, in the city of Bodaibo and the adjacent area, the population has decreased by 45.4%. Bodaibo is one of the largest gold deposits in Russia.
The population of the Mamsko-Chunsky district has decreased by 43.2%. The number of residents of the Ust-Ilimsky district has decreased by 33.2%, and of the Chunsky district by 28.3%. Timber harvesting has been carried out in these areas for several decades.
The number of residents has increased in the Irkutsk urban agglomeration. The largest increase was in the Irkutsk district, the nearest suburb of the regional capital.
